STEAM Education at JCS

Here at JCS, we are blessed to have Ms. Dutcher integrating the arts and STEAM into our classrooms. Read her thoughts on STEAM education below and why we value it so heavily here at JCS:

As our world becomes increasingly complex and technology-driven, the importance of STEAM education cannot be overstated. STEAM education combines science, technology, engineering, arts, and math to create a comprehensive approach to learning that prepares students for the future. But why is STEAM education so important for those with learning differences?

First, STEAM education provides hands-on learning opportunities that can help students with learning differences better engage with the material. Many students with learning differences struggle with traditional lecture-based learning, but STEAM education encourages experimentation and exploration, which can help these students better understand and retain the material.

Second, STEAM education emphasizes problem-solving and critical thinking skills, which are essential for success in any field. For those with learning differences, developing these skills can be particularly challenging, but STEAM education provides opportunities to practice and strengthen these abilities.

Finally, STEAM education can help build confidence and self-esteem in students with learning differences. When students are able to successfully complete a STEAM project or solve a complex problem, it can be a major confidence boost that carries over into other areas of their lives.

In short, STEAM education is an essential tool for helping students with learning differences succeed. By providing hands-on learning opportunities, emphasizing problem-solving and critical thinking skills, and building confidence and self-esteem, STEAM education can help these students unlock their full potential and prepare for a bright future.

Beyond College Acceptances: Cultivating Confidence and Community at JCS

As Director of Enrollment Management at The John Crosland School, I'm often met with the question that weighs heavy on the minds of many parents: "Do students who attend your school go on to college?" It's a valid concern, one that reflects the aspirations parents hold for their children's futures. The short and easy answer? Yes. This year alone, we've witnessed our seniors receive acceptances from institutions like USC Lancaster, Charleston Southern, University of Arizona, Emory & Henry, and Converse, among others. While these accomplishments are undeniably impressive, they only scratch the surface of what makes our school truly unique.

In my opinion, what sets The John Crosland School apart isn't solely our track record of college placements. We recognize that while we can't predict the exact paths our students will take after leaving our halls, we can equip them with the tools and support they need to navigate whatever lies ahead. It's our unwavering commitment to nurturing confidence, fostering a sense of belonging, and providing a supportive environment where students can form and strengthen friendships that can serve beyond our halls.

Confidence-building lies at the core of our mission. From the moment students step foot on campus, they're encouraged to explore their passions, voice their opinions, and take on leadership roles. Unlike the confines of a large traditional setting, where students might feel lost in the crowd, our smaller, close-knit community empowers every individual to shine. Whether it's spearheading a club, speaking at events, or championing causes they believe in, our students are given ample opportunities to step into their own greatness.

But it's not just about academic achievements or extracurricular accolades. At JCS, we place equal emphasis on creating a supportive and inclusive community. We understand the importance of connection, and we go above and beyond to ensure that every student feels valued, loved, and supported. From faculty mentors who offer guidance and encouragement to peer groups like breakfast club and lunch bunch, we prioritize the holistic well-being of our students.

In essence, JCS isn't just a stepping stone to higher education; it's a launching pad for building, practicing, and solidifying skills needed in all aspects of young adult life and beyond. We believe that true excellence extends far beyond academic prowess—it encompasses resilience, empathy, and the ability to forge meaningful connections.

So, while college acceptances are undoubtedly cause for celebration, they're just one chapter in the larger narrative of success that unfolds at The John Crosland School.
